Post Route 66 – On Film Rolls A & B

I’ve been home just over a month, a lot has changed in the past month. I was laid off after 20 years, I’m not one to let things bring me down. I have taken this opportunity to setup a Print Store, I had a leather binder laser engraved with my Road Trip Project for all the postcards I sent myself and I have had my 13 rolls of film finally developed. Taking this opportunity to focus more on my photography and sharing more from my trip. I have a lot of plans, including the possibility of putting together a coffee table book of the entire trip.

With all the changes going on, I still haven’t really had a chance to completely reflect on my trip as a whole and what I got from the entire experience. With my free time, I’ve been able to scan in my 480 photos that I took on my Pentax K1000. I plan on going through and posting a few rolls at a time of some of my favorite shots and using that as a way to look back and journal my thoughts on the trip postmortum.

Crater Lake

Crater Lake is a national park I want to get back to. With the smoke in the air while I was there, digital give me the best opportunity to take advantage of my film camera. The Kodak Ektar film really shines on a bright day where I find the blueness of overcast dull and less interesting.

As I progressed into California and down to Mexico, the sunny weather gave me more what I was expecting from the film. The rocky domes of Yosemite against the bright California skies shows off the saturation of the blue against the warm contrast of the rocks.

Reds are also very beautiful, the bright fire engine red really pop. Anytime I saw any red, whether an American flag, fire station, or the largest box of raisins at Sun-Maid, I trusted the red would be shining bright in 2 months when i finally get to see the picture I took.

Streets of Tijuana

When I went across the border while in San Diego I wanted to travel light, no need to cary a bunch of stuff when I was walking across. So I only took my film camera with me, waiting to see how some of my shots came out. I only walked around for a little bit around Tijuana, not much off the beaten path. I wish I could have been a little more comfortable to explore and capture more of Tijuana, I think I could have had a lost most interesting street moments.

The last of Roll B was my trip to the San Diego Zoo, the feel of these photos were to capture more of a vintage family trip to the zoo. The Zoo was very shaded and was a little difficult to get my lighting just right, but I like how the look of the animals were. The zoo was a lot, I don’t necessarily recommend trying to fit a trip to Tijuana in the morning and the zoo in the afternoon all in the same day. I also may have paid for a scooter to mob around the park, had I known that I could have paid to rent one.

Lastly here is this Lambo that was parked in the lot of Motel 6 I stayed in while in San Diego. Was not expecting to see that while at a motel that cost me $80 a night, but guess if you own a car like that, you probably also want to save a couple bucks while traveling.
